Northern Lights Planner is an independent project. It exists because most aurora guides stop at "September to March" and never answer the question travellers actually have: if I go then, for that long, what are my chances?

Who runs it

Northern Lights Planner is written and built by Deepak R, a software developer in Chennai.

Where our numbers come from

We work from public records: hourly weather reports from airports and national weather services, the geomagnetic Kp index published by GFZ (the German Research Centre for Geosciences), NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, and operators' own published prices and schedules. Where a figure is our own calculation, the page explains how we got it and where it might be wrong. How we work out the aurora odds sets out the method, the thresholds and the limits.

Tour, hotel and ticket details are compiled from operators' published terms and prices and from review counts on booking sites, on the date each page shows. We have not taken every tour or stayed in every place we describe, and the pages say so.

Some claims get repeated across travel sites with no traceable source. If we can't find one, we leave the claim out.

How we make money

The site has no ads. Some pages link to booking partners, currently GetYourGuide for tours and tickets. If you book through those links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Every page with such links says so near the top, and the links are marked as sponsored. A commission never changes the odds or advice we publish, and we only list tours we would describe the same way without it.

Corrections

Prices, schedules and rules change. Each page shows the date it was last checked. If something is wrong or out of date, email us and we will correct the page and update its date.
